What starts at boot — switch it off, don't delete it

Startup items scattered across the Startup folder, the registry, scheduled tasks and services are gathered into one list. Switch off what you don't need with a single Disable, and bring it back any time with Enable.

Latest 2.0.3 · Windows (64-bit)

Switched off, not deleted

Same setting as Task Manager

Startup items from four places, in one list

Windows keeps what it runs at startup in several places.
StartCleaner reads all four in turn, puts them in one list, and notes where each one came from in the Source column.

  1. 1

    Startup

The Start menu "Startup" folder (all users · current user)

Shortcuts and programs. Switching one off only adds the same "Disabled" mark Task Manager uses — the file stays where it is.

  2. 2

    Registry

Run entries registered to start at sign-in (HKLM · HKCU)

Entries a program added when it was installed. They are switched off the same way as the Startup folder, and the original value is not deleted.

  3. 3

    Task

Tasks in the root of Task Scheduler

Tasks that run at set times, such as update checks. Switching one off disables the task itself.

  4. 4

    Service

Services that start automatically with Windows

Background services. Switching one off sets its startup type to "Disabled", so it won't start even when another program asks for it.

Windows services and tasks that the system needs are left out of the list from the start, so there is less chance of switching off something you shouldn't.

Try it yourself

The window below is a copy of the app's screen.
Pick a row and press Disable.

Deleted items cannot be restored.

The service has been deleted. A service that was running is fully removed after a restart.

Move between rows with ↑ ↓ and reload the list with F5 (after clicking the window once).

The program names in the list are made-up examples. Changes stay on this page and do not touch this computer's settings. Save List downloads the example list as a text file in the same format as the app (source|name|target).

Just what you need to tidy up startup

One list for everything

No more hunting through the Startup folder, the registry, Task Scheduler and services separately.

Switch off, don't delete

Disable only stops it from running. The program and its entry stay as they are, so one Enable brings it back.

Windows items stay hidden

Windows components that must not be switched off never appear in the list. When you are online, the list of items to hide is updated.

Names you can recognise

Items are shown with the product name and icon stored in the program file instead of the file name.

Delete leftovers

Entries left behind by programs you removed can be switched off and then deleted for good with a right-click on Delete.

Save List

Keep a text file of how things were before you tidy up. Windows items that aren't shown in the list are included too.

How do I…

I want to know what starts together with my computer

Just run StartCleaner. Startup items from all four places appear in one list, and the Source column tells you where each one is registered. If you have just installed a program, press F5 to reload the list.

I don't want my messenger to start every time I sign in

Click that program in the list and press Disable. The program is not removed — it simply no longer starts by itself with Windows. Run it yourself when you need it.

I want to turn an item back on

Tick All Programs and items you switched off earlier appear as dimmed rows. Click the row and press Enable; it starts again from the next boot.

I want to stop update tasks running in the background

Rows whose Source is Task are tasks registered in Task Scheduler. Many programs put their update checks here. Pick one and press Disable, and it won't run even when its time comes.

I don't want a service to start at boot

Press Disable on a Service row and that service won't start with Windows, nor when another program asks for it. It's best to check which program uses a service before switching it off.

I don't know what an item is

Double-click the row and your browser opens an information page about that item. Use it to find out what a program does before switching it off.

A program I uninstalled still has a startup entry

First set the row to Disable, then right-click → Delete and press Yes in the confirmation. Deleted items can't be restored, so only delete what you're sure you don't need. Delete doesn't appear on rows that are on — switching it off and using the PC for a few days before deleting is the safe way.

I want to remove a service completely

Services, too, can only be Deleted after being set to Disable. A running service is stopped before it is removed, and a single restart cleans it up completely.

I want to keep a record before tidying up

Right-click the list → Save List and choose where to save. Everything, including Windows items that aren't shown in the list, is saved as a text file (source | name | target). Handy for comparing before and after.

Is it the same as switching off in Task Manager?

For Startup and Registry items, yes. Switch one off in StartCleaner and Task Manager's startup apps list shows it as "Disabled" too, and the other way round. Tasks and services are things Task Manager's startup apps list doesn't show.

Long names are cut off

Drag the edge of the window to make it wider and the Program column widens with it. You can also drag the border between column headings to set the width yourself.

I started it again while it was already running

Only one StartCleaner runs at a time. Starting it again doesn't open a new one; the window that's already open comes to the front (and is restored if it was minimised).

Frequently asked questions

Is it free?

Yes. It's freeware, so you can use it free of charge anywhere — at work, at home, in public offices or at school — and share it freely.

Why does it ask for administrator rights?

Changing startup items that apply to all users, as well as services and scheduled tasks, needs administrator rights. Just press Yes in the Windows prompt when it starts.

What changes when I press Disable?

For Startup folder and registry items it only adds the same "Disabled" mark Task Manager uses; the shortcut and the registry value stay as they are. Scheduled tasks are disabled, and services have their startup type set to Disabled. All of it can be undone with Enable.

Does a service go back to how it was when I enable it again?

A service you Enable gets the startup type "Automatic". Services that were Manual or Delayed start before become Automatic too, so leave the dimmed Manual services in All Programs alone unless you switched them off yourself.

Why don't I see Windows items?

Services and tasks Windows needs to work — audio, network, security and so on — are hidden from the list from the start. They don't appear even when All Programs is ticked.

What is the internet connection used for?

Only for new-version notices and for fetching the list of Windows items to hide. Without a connection it works as usual with its built-in list.

Is there no settings screen?

There's nothing to set. The text follows the Windows display language and the colours follow the Windows app mode (light · dark). Change the app mode while it's open and it follows straight away.

Can I use it without installing?

Yes. Unzip the portable version (ZIP) and run StartCleaner.exe. It has the same features as the installer.
